| Laird's Wood The great forest of Caledon once covered over 1.5 million hectares of the Scottish Highlands, and was home to a rich diversity of plants and animals. Today just 1% of the forest remains, and species such as the beaver, wild boar and lynx have gone. The surviving remnants of the forest are ageing and fragmented, and because of overgrazing, the trees struggle to regenerate naturally.
Now it's up to us to ensure the survival of this ancient and remarkable woodland. It's Scotland's equivalent of the rainforest and it needs our help.
This type of mixed woodland is vital for promoting a diversity of invertebrates which are themselves essential for the development of the natural flora and fauna.
The souvenir plots form part of Laird's Wood, a small part of a tract of ancient Caledonian Forest that completely covered Lochaber until most of it was felled in recent times to make way for sheep. We replanted part of the wood in 1992 with a mixture of native broadleaves and some softwoods to attempt to re-establish these important habitats.
Because the land which we are selling has been subdivided into hundreds of small parcels, it can never be built on or developed. So in addition to obtaining a Laird or Lady title, you will be helping to preserve this woodland in its natural state for future generations to enjoy.
